October 2k5 Westchester roadmeet.
Also some independent riding around with Doug Kerr.
All links open in a separate window.

The junction of the Bronx River and Cross County Parkways
The only guide sign assembly in NY that does NOT have rounded corners. Also features the old practice of putting the junction number on the bottom of the sine, as opposed to a seperate plate at top. |
Westbound on the Cross-County now, not looking too terribly parklike at all.
We’re rolling thru Yonkas(Yonkers) after all. |
Approaching j4-which actually links to feeder roads alongside the Thruway.
Note the lack of hard shoulders-even the verge is dodgy here. |
Approaching Cross-County j2 westbound.
This is a newer sign asembly with “Text-in-a-box®” a NY speciality. |
Now southbound on the Saw Mill River Parkway.
The Saw Mill Turns into the Henry Hudson Parkway when you cross
The Yonkas-Bronx line; The junction numbers reset(going from j3 to 24 southbound) This is the first Bronx exit. We're in NYCDOT territory here. The sines are lit. |
The freeway section of Mosholu is very short;
It soon turns into a boulevard. You get directions back to the freeway-using GREEN Interstate Shields. |
Just east of Webster Avenue on the Mosholou,
You have this rail/subway overpass. |
Back on the Bronx River Parkway southbound,
and IN YR FACE with the j7 advance sine. Ha! |
Junction 7 on the Bronx River Parkway southbound.
NYC Bridge Trailblazers on the Pelham Parkway.
Nice example of a NYC signal installation on Pelham Parkway.
The NO TURN sine prohibits traffic from filtering in from the outer highway. The Pelham has no elevated junctions; but access is limited to a few signalized junctions. |
Closeup of the toy sine in the snap above,
with requisite NYC graffiti. |
Joining the Hutchinson River Parkway North here.
This is a nasty lil cloverleaf. I can imagine it's a joy in traffic. |
The New England Thruway/Bruckner Expressway(IH 95) overpass of the Hutch.
After crossing the New England Thruway northbound,
The Hutchinson River Parkway crosses the Hutchinson River! Fancy that. On a drawbrdge, of course. |
The signal for the Hutchinson River bridge plus some SERIOUS :| gates.
IH 95 loops to the west of the Hutch,
and then crosses it before heading northeast. This is where you get yr shot to join it northbound. |
Ha! Tyme Warpe! Not really, but it does give the page a science-fictiony goodness.
This was a rarity I found while making a bed delivery. These will be lettering on bare metal soon enough. This is on Lincoln Ave in Mount Vernon, NY. |
Weird Font-orama here. The arrow is just sick. Ugh. |
DIY signals here. Graft a Marblite segment onto a Horni two-head,
and you get a proper signal. More or less. Also on Lincoln Avenue in Mount Vernon. |
Two views of a butterfly gantry on the southern Cross County Parkway outer highway.
Notice the difference in reflectivity between this assembly and the more modern gantry in the corner of the picture. This assembly is an oldie-since the Parkway gets a shield, but NY 22 does not. |

Northbound on NY 100 at Tuckahoe Road; and a fine example of sine rot.
Going under Tuckahoe Road on NY 100.
No turns across traffic are allowed on this section of NY 100.
You have to leave to the right to go to the left. |
Diagrammatic sign for the Fort Hill Road junction on NY 100.
The ugly square shield is suffering from sine rot. |
Southbound on the Bronx River Parkway crossing under the IH 287.
There is no direct connexion between thse roads. |
The Westchester County maintained section of the Bronx River Parkway in White Plains.
Many junction signs look like this; and level junctions are noted as “EXITS”. |
The Bronx River Parkway heading southbound south of White Plains.
Westchester county maintains this section. It’s all quite narrow through here. |
A curve warning sign on the Bronx River Parkway.
The Heathcoate Road overpass of the Heathcoate Bypass;
a mile-long super-two section of NY 125. There are no elevated junctions on this road. |
Northbound on the New England Thruway between j18 and j19.
j19 on the New England Thruway, Playland Parkway junction.
The off slip makes a steep climb on to meet the Parkway, and you make a sharp turn to join the road to pass over the Metro-North/Amtrak railway(Former Pennsylvainia Railway) lines south of the Thruway. Here’s the Gribblenation page on this road. |
YOU ARE SPEEDING sign on the Playland Parkway eastbound.
The loop at the eastern end of Playland Parkway at Playland Park.
A “DO NOT ENTER” sine that's not quite right adorns a temporary barricade. |
Some Greasy Guy we found hanging out next to the frozen Beef Pies in Boney’s Market.
Back on the New England Thruway, approaching j21.
The j21 off-slip; The railway line follows under the Thruway at this point.
Passing under the Thruway-eastbound IH 287 to
northbound IH 95 traffic is on the opposite side of the barrier. |
Old State Name Interstate shields on Westchester Avenue westbound;
which serves as feeder roads for the IH 287 east of White Plains. There are a lot of old sines along this road. |
Property Sticky on a Town of Greenwich sine.
A Holy Grail here: CT state outline sines AND black on white directional sines!
These are near Merritt Parkway J29. |
Modern junction signage with the boring square.
Westbound on the Merritt approaching j27/30(depending on whose side yr on).
with a Merritt guide sine displaying a NY shield. |
Now to NY 117 west of the Rockefeller Estate.
Note the difference in sine reflectivity here. |
Looking west in the central reservation of the “Super Troopers” highway-NY 117.
The end of NY 117 west, showing a wildlife overpass.
You've seen this before:
Eastbound IH 287 passing under northbound IH 87 at the “I-8” junction. |
Eastbound on the IH 287, passing over NY 9A(j2 westbound) in Elmsford.
This a bridge rebuild in place, 2/3 done at this point. The other third is air in this snap. NY rebuilds bridges in this manner almost exclusively. |
Another rebuild-in-place project: The nortbound Sprain crossing of IH 287.
On the left you can see forms being built; on the right, a partially complete pier. |
back to junction 27/30 on the Hutch/Merritt with Doug Kerr.
Here’s a sine in need of cleain’ doncha think?
Decisions, decisions.....
A rarity here-a CT 120A sign. The road is properly *NY* 120A.
This is all CT signage; appropriate since we *are* in CT. |
Doug Kerr examines the closed left turn slip at j27;
You get another shot of the CT 120A sine. It probably had a partner, removed when the slip was closed. |
A large “Allowed Cloud” here.
This is the NB NY 120 to SB Hutch entry. You cross into CT to return to NY. |
Looking west over the Hutch at j30.
A now-vintage Westchester County Cell Phone ban sign.
Westchester led the state in banning handheld use while driving. This has since become state law. |
Older Merritt Parkway sine. |
