The Yellow Stop Sign.
This has been a frequent topic of discussion on the newsgroup misc.transport.road. I have seen these in shops and old pictures in books and online. Well imagine my surprise as I found a surviving sign actually posted on a road! This sign is standing at the junction of Sullivan County Highway 172 and Valentine's Dam Road, just west of the Villlage of Wurtsboro. The quality's not great,
as it was done with a cell-phone camera.
Upd*te! As of May 2k6 this sign has been replaced. Sorry.
A front-on view of the sign. The yellow is barely there,
and will likely be gone in a few years leaving bare metal.
A closeup of the bottom of the sign.
Note the "Traffic Commission" credit. You only see this on old signs. The sign is double-bolted to the post.
The back of the sign. It was black, but the paint is fading.
The post is an "L" Shaped steel post,
a hallmark of older state sign installation.
The sign in context, you're looking east onto
Sullivan County Highway 172.
It's about 4½ feet high.
